SideStory Privacy Policy

SideStory Limited (“SideStory”, “we” or “us”) takes your privacy very seriously. We are committed to protecting the privacy of the personal information you provide us. We comply with the UK’s Data Protection Act 1998 and related UK legislation and are registered on the public register of data controllers maintained by the Information Commissioner in the UK.

This Privacy Policy informs you about our policies and procedures for collecting, using, disclosing, and protecting the personal information we receive when you use our services at www.sidestory.co or via our mobile applications (together, the “Site”). Unless otherwise defined below, terms used in this Privacy Policy have the same meanings as in the Terms of Service on our Site. Our Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. If we do so, we will clearly state the date of the most recent update.

Our philosophy

We will only contact you using the personal information you have provided us if you have given us your consent. If we contact you, we will always aim to do so respectfully, relevantly, and appropriately.   If you are ever concerned about the way we contact you, please let us know so that we may address your concerns.

Agreement to our Terms and Conditions

 By using our Site you are agreeing to our Terms of Service, and to the terms of this Privacy Policy, so we would encourage you to read them carefully.

What are cookies?

We use “cookies” to store and collect information about how you use our Site. Cookies are small pieces of information stored by the browser on your computer’s hard drive. They are used to send the information stored on them back to our web server when you access our Site. Using cookies allows us to set up our Site to reflect your personal preferences and to improve your experience on our Site, and to recommend content that may be of interest to you. More information about cookies is available at www.allaboutcookies.org

Our use of cookies

SideStory only has a few cookies set. When we include content from other sites (like Facebook or Twitter), those sites may also use cookies to improve your experience of their sites.

Using cookies to measure web traffic

We use Google Analytics to tell us about how visitors use our Site. Google Analytics uses cookies to detect that someone has been to our Site before. This allows us to know how often people return to our Site, how long they stay, and what parts of our Site they visit. We use this information to improve your experience in using our Site.

Using cookies from social networks

We use social networks to promote our Services. To help us do so we try to make it as easy as possible to share content and to see what content is popular on those networks. Accordingly, we include recommendations from Facebook, tweets from Twitter, and content from Google+ and add buttons to allow you to easily share to those networks. SideStory uses Facebook to drive the commenting functionality on our Site. This technology is called using social ‘plugins’. Our use of them allows those sites to use cookies.

Using Facebook plugins

We use Facebook social plugins on our Site. These include the Like button, Facebook comments, recommendations and connect. Facebook will access some cookies if you have been to Facebook previously. If you haven’t been to Facebook, cookies will not be added.

Using Twitter plugins

We use Twitter social plugins on our Site. These enable you to follow our Twitter accounts easily, share content via Twitter, and to display the latest tweets from SideStory. Twitter uses cookies to improve its own service.

Using Google+ plugins

We use Google+ plugins on our Site. This allows you to share links via that service. That plugin uses a number of cookies, depending on whether you are logged in to Google and Google+.

Using cookies for advertising

We have a number of places on our Site where we may show advertisements for our partners. Cookies may be used in the systems we use to place advertisements on our Site.

How we collect your information through Facebook Connect

When you use our Site you may have the option to connect your Facebook account to SideStory.co. If you connect your Facebook account, we collect information from your account to display the content on our Site in the most optimal way. To access this information you need to click the Facebook Connect button on the site. This brings up a pop-up window from Facebook directly, asking for permission for us to access the data with ticks in this pop-up for your Facebook ‘likes’ and ‘Check-ins’.

What information we collect when you use Facebook Connect

We collect information on your likes that are included on your Facebook page to try to improve the content on our Site. If you choose to connect but do not tick the boxes, we may still have access to your basic information posted on Facebook but not your likes and interests.  We do not store your email address, Facebook username or your user ID or any other information from your Facebook profile that could identify you directly.

What information we collect if you sign up for our travel promotions or newsletters

If you sign up to receive our specially selected travel promotions or newsletter we will collect the following personal information from you: your email address, name, date of birth and what categories of travel promotion you are interested in hearing more about.

Our use of your information for marketing

We may occasionally display offers, promotions, products or services on our Site which we think will interest you based on the information collected from your cookies and from Facebook Connect.

How else we use your information

We may also use your information for the following purposes:

  • To help provide our Services to you;
  • To help provide you with relevant travel offers and promotions;
  • To send you promotional codes for discounts on your use of our Services in future;
  • To send you our newsletter if you have signed up to receive it;
  • To conduct occasional surveys and to analyse our customer base to help us to ensure the Services we offer are relevant and attractive to you;
  • To check whether you are eligible for any competitions we may run, and to contact you if you win;
  • To comply with the law; and
  • Where we believe it is necessary to prevent any illegal activity or to protect our interests.

We won’t hold your personal information for longer than is reasonably necessary or required by law.

Sharing your information with anyone else

We will only share your information with anyone else if:

  • You have consented to us doing so;
  • We have to do so to comply with the law or with orders of courts or other authorities;
  • We believe it is reasonably necessary to prevent illegal activity or to protect our interests; and
  • We need to do so to enable trusted third party service providers to provide and improve our Services to you, or to undertake user surveys and analysis to better understand your needs and preferences. These trusted third parties will only be permitted to use your personal information for the purposes we specify, and then only if we have your consent for such purposes.

SideStory will never sell or rent your details to any other organisation or user.

Posting User Content on our Site

Our Site may become available for customers and travellers to upload comments, information, recommendations, and travel stories (“User Content”).  When you upload it, User Content becomes information in the public domain, so it may be accessed by anyone using the web through independent search engines. Because of the public nature of any User Content you post, you are doing so at your own risk.   We cannot guarantee to protect any information you upload as User Content in the same way we protect your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy.

Making sure our Site is secure

We take strict security precautions to protect your information and how it is stored and used, who sees it, and to stop it being accessed by anyone who is not authorized to do so. Your personal information will be located behind a firewall. We take security extremely seriously. However, no system is 100% secure, so we do not guarantee that we can completely protect your personal information. SideStory does not accept any liability for the loss, theft or misuse of your personal information if there is a breach of security.

Transferring your personal information outside the EU

The information we collect from you may be transferred to and stored outside the EU, where different data protection laws apply. That information may also be processed by people operating outside the EU who work for us or one of our suppliers. If we need to transfer your personal information to a company based outside the EU, we will still take steps to ensure that your information is dealt with using the standards applicable in the EU.

Links to other websites

Our Site may contain links to other websites. SideStory does not have any control over those sites. They are likely to have different privacy policies and security procedures. We cannot take responsibility for any information you provide to other sites.

Accessing your personal information

At any time you can request us to give you access to the personal information we hold about you.  To do so, write to us at info@sidestory.co. Sometimes we may ask you to provide proof of your identity before we show you your personal information. We do that to prevent your information being accessed by anyone who is not authorized to access it. You are entitled to know whether we or someone else on our behalf is processing your personal information; what personal information we hold; details of the purposes for the processing of your personal information; and details of any third party with whom your personal information has been shared. (We may charge a small fee to cover our costs in providing this information). You can request that we correct any personal information we hold about you where it is inaccurate.
