London’s Top 7: Mother’s Day Afternoon Teas
Is there anyone more deserving of a treat than our mother? She puts up with the moodiness, patiently accepts our questionable taste in music, counsels us through the challenges of work, and supports us through pain and pleasure. If anyone deserves a full day of celebration and indulgence, it’s her.
Afternoon tea is a wonderful British tradition. Sitting down for a few hours sipping on loose-leaf teas while savoring cucumber sandwiches, fragrant scones, and creamy puddings is certainly one of the most relaxing ways to spend the day.
London is filled with venues to treat Mum to a proper Mother’s Day Afternoon tea. Here are some of our favorite places to indulge in a wonderful afternoon of chats and nibbles with your leading lady.
1. Duke’s Hotel
Hidden away on a side street in Mayfair, locals love this smaller venue for a delightful afternoon tea. While keeping up with the sophistication of the larger hotels, Duke’s feels a little more relaxed. Be sure to request the PJ Room downstairs for a big group (maybe a moms and daughters outing?) and order a second round of coronation chicken sandwiches – they’re well worth it.
2. The Ritz
Location: Green Park
There really is nothing quite like the Ritz. Its majestic decorations and interiors make everyone who walks through the dining room feel like royalty. The extensive tea menu ranges from traditional favorites to exotics flavors, and the food is second to none. Service is impeccable, ready to cater to every need. Scones are served fresh out of the oven, waiting to be layered with fresh clotted cream and jam: tradition at its finest.
3. Soho Secret Tea Room
Walk into the Coach and Horses Pub, take the stairs to the top room and you will find a true hidden gem in Soho. This secret team room offers a cozy atmosphere with a fantastic selection of cakes. A secret location that is kind to your wallet without providing any less indulgence.
4. Bea’s of Bloomsbury
This adorable bakery near Holborn station promises an affordable afternoon tea with a remarkable homelike feel. Their strong suit is undoubtedly their sweet selection – they even serve homemade marshmallows! Creative cupcakes are a modern complement to the classic scones and sandwiches. A must try for all those who are looking for a home away from home.
5. Mad Hatter’s Tea at the Sanderson
If Mom is into quirky things and funky places, she will love the Mad Hatter’s. The beloved classic book by Lewis Carroll is the inspiration for this wonderful tearoom, taking guests on a culinary trip through Wonderland. From their caterpillar cake to a storybook menu, the Sanderson’s attention to detail sets the bar high for all future tea parties.
6. Goring Hotel
The Goring is magical. The garden view from the Lounge is spectacular. The locations allows guests to experience a quiet haven only steps away from bustling Buckingham Palace. Their gluten free option is fantastic and does not sacrifice taste. Mum might feel lighter after finishing the tray of tasty delights, but certifiably no less satisfied.
This is the ideal destination for all girly-girls. The all pink interior of the Parlor has a feminine touch that all ladies would love. Toast to mum with a glass of pink champagne to embrace the full fledged pink experience. Sit back in the plush couches and savor the beautifully crafted sweets fit for a pair of trendy princesses!
