F Scott Fitzgerald said, ‘Plot is character and character is plot’. Characters are central to all good writing, fiction or not. This experience will explore Brixton, a bustling market, and look at how writers go about finding inspiration.
Most of us like to people-watch, none more so than writers; but it’s knowing how the key details – how people look, move, express themselves, what motivates them, what they want – work in creating compelling and convincing characters.
Starting at Brixton Tube Station, novelist Heidi James will begin by explaining (over good coffee) what to look for and just how important good characters are to good writing. You will then take to the streets of Brixton Market, where you'll take notes, photos and observe, while Heidi points out the people and places of interest that she might use in her work.
In Heidi's excellent company, you'll spend time exploring the area and exchanging ideas, before returning to the café and looking over what you have collected. Then you'll start writing, creating a story outline and character scene under Heidi's friendly guidance, taking the first step towards becoming a novelist yourself.
Good reads for creatives.
